Carton 100mm f/13 "MD" OTA Construction - Billet of Aluminum for Rear Cell (Before Milling)

6" OD x 3" billet of T-6061 aluminum chucked in Brian Choin's lathe in prepartion to mill the rear objective cell. (Click to see an enlarged image.)

When I purchase the Carton 100mm f/13 achromat from Sheldon Faworski, it came mounted in an aluminum cell, which I refer to as the "Front Cell". But it did not come with the rear section to mount the lens to the main tube, so it had to be fabricated. I was blessed when fellow amateur astronomer and good friend Brian Choin offered to make the rear cell for me after I was initially considering making it from wood. Brian charged me only $60.00 to fabricate the piece from a solid 6" OD x 3" L billet of T-6061 aluminum. The rear cell will accommodate the front cell holding the objective and the dew shield. I will also incorporate an exposed transition rim that separates the dew shield from the main tube. In this shot the billet is held ready for milling in the chuck's jaws of Brian's metal cutting lathe.
