SAO 10” NEWTONIAN FORK MOUNT FINISHING

After doing a bit of research on finishes for the Fork Mount, I made the decision to use a decent marine grade of varnish that has ultraviolet protection along with excellent moisture retention. Polyurethane was an option, but it did not possess that same qualities. So, I went with Helmsman® Satin Finish Spar Urethane. A quart of this stuff cost about $12.00 at Home Depot, or Wal-Mart. I applied approximately three coats to all of the wood components of the Fork Mount. This photographic exposé displays the richness the varnish gave to woods patina. Of course, liberal sanding of all surfaces was a must. The end result was quite striking. Subtle details in the birch grain pattern popped right out giving a warm pleasing appendage. Prior to applying the varnish, all screw head holes were filled with Elmer's® waterproof wood putty for a more clean finished look. I know I could have done an even better job of finishing the Fork Mount, but I think it still came out rather well.
