Typically,
the focuser housing tends to retain their finish and luster over the years,
but after being exposed to the outdoor elements for an extended number
of years, the finish became very dull. So, I used a liberal amount of BIX Paint Remover to strip off as much of the old paint as possible. It
did not clean it completely, but it exposed a good smooth surface to restore.
Now,
all of the metal hardware for this instrument has been stripped of old
paint. Next, each part was buffed smooth with a Scotch-BriteŽ scouring
pad. Next,
Gray Primer (by RustoleumŽ) was applied to all of the metal parts
except for the chrome focusing tube, rack-and pinion knob, and set
screws. The parts are now ready for painting.
