The focuser broken down for cleaning and replacement of guides... (Click for enlarged view)

On New Years Day of 2009, I sold a Astro-Tech AT-80 80mm refractor OTA to a gentleman this telescope has been named after, Brigadier General Richard Pierce. During our communications, we became friends from afar and exchanged information regarding the astronomical equipment we owned. When I made mention to him that I was going to build a 127mm refractor, he immediately offered to help by supplying me with a 2.7" inch focuser taken from a Meade 127ED refractor, among other items. In accepting the focuser and items, I was very appreciative. In so doing, I felt the need to pay back my respect for not only the equipment he shared, but mainly for the service he rendered in keeping our country safe as a member of the armed forces. Therefore, I dubbed this instrument:

"The VSC/ SAO 127mm f/9.4 'Brigadier General Richard Pierce' Refractor"

In the photo above, it shows the 2.7" inch Mead focuser broken down to be cleaned, and for replacement of the H.D.P.E. guides. From right to left the items are: draw tube with rack, locking/ guide plate, helical pinion rod with anodized aluminum knobs, and focuser housing. All parts are metal, except for the rubber grips on the focuser knobs. A beautiful and strong addition to this special telescope instrument.
