Unfortunately, the Meade 127ED rack and pinion focuser carries a bad
reputation among amateurs for mechanical workmanship. I must say
that it was not built to the standards of the optics it was used to
focus the images for. But with a bit of work, I was able to improve
it functionality. The first thing I did was to remove and replace
the adhesive guides with smooth ones made from Teflon guides. This
was done to the two main guide surfaces in the focuser housing, as well as to the
adjustable tension bar. In this photo, I am trimming off the access
from one of the two main guides. Once complete, the 2.7" focuser's
draw tube will glide much smoother throughout the whole racking
distance, as compared to the original guides.
