In my
pursuit to find a viable option to make inexpensive knife-edge
baffles for the 127mm f/9.4 "BGRP" refractor, I decided to go with
CDs! An idea that I got from a Cloudy Nights member by the and of
Brian
(a.k.a.
Happy-Idiot on CN). Typically most ATMs cut out their
baffles from aluminum sheet and attach them along three threaded
rods. But in my case, I already had all of the materials I needed to
complete the task using CDs and will actually seal them in place
with silicon latex caulk. I will be making four baffles for this
instrument.
To began
the project, I first sanded eight old CDs with a 220-grit sanding
pad on my random orbital sander. This removed the labels and gave the
CDs a beautifully smooth matte finish, that would easily accept
primer and paint. The eight CDs will be paired to make 4 individual
knife-edge baffles to mount inside of the telescope.
