Fork Mount Construction - Upper L-R Declination Axis Support Braces

Upper Left and Right Declination Axis Support Braces

We continue here with Part 2 of the Construction of the SAO 10" Newtonian Fork Mount with the attachment of the left and right fork arm tip braces. As mentioned at the end of Part 1 of this section, they double the thickness of the placement spot for the Declination Axis Hanger Bearings. Note that now the holes have been drilled to receive the bearings, which the bearings will be used on both sides of each arm tip. There is total of four of these 5/8" inch I. D. shaft hanger bearings. The central holes in the braces are slightly larger than the 5/8" inch diameter by 7" inch long precision ground stainless steel shafts. The two flanking holes are 3/8" inch in diameter to accept the bearing mounting hardware. The cradle will ride between the arms and will be attached to the fork by means of two cast aluminum 5/8" inch I.D. motor arbors. A friction clutch mechanism on the declination axis will allow for smooth slewing in locating of celestial objects.
