When I purchased the Carton
cradle rings, they did not come with any mounting hardware at all.
Therefore, I had to come up with a method of connecting the halves
to a hinged joint to allow opening and closing the cradle rings. To
join each pair of Carton cradle rings, I got idea from Sheldon
Faworski )of Cloudy Nights) to use motor cycle master chain links to form hinge plates.
Unfortunately, he did not have size information on the ones he used
on his, and I had to figure out the size myself. Before
ordering the chain links I had to determine the correct size. But
first I had to acquire some measurements. I did this be evenly placing and spacing one pair of
the cradle rings around the circumference of the main tube, and then
measured the distance between the mounting holes at their hinge
points. From the center of
each hinge point hole was approximately .750". Then I looked online for master
chain links with a pitch of similar size. The pitch for chain links
is generally the distance between the holes in each chain link. I
was fortunate to find several on eBay under one ad. Typically that
are sold separately, with only one available per ad.
With the chain link
hinge plates acquired and installed, I also had to improvise a method of locking
the cradle rings around the main tube. Since both cradle ring halves
were identical having bolt slots in them, I purchased four draw
knobs to do the job. Each cradle ring will use two draw knobs each
with a thread rod (made by cutting off the head of each of two draw
knob mounting screws) between them to pull the two cradle ring
halves together around the circumference of the tube via the slots.
The end result was great to say the least. |
