Fork Mount Construction - Bottom-of-Top/ Right Ascension Axis Box and Flange

Bottom-of-Top Panel for Right Ascension Axis Box and Flange (Click for enlarged view)

Here is the bottom side of the top section of the RA Axis box. The flange will be concealed as mentioned earlier to allow for slightly shorter fork tines/ arms, and for esthetics. The flange is mounted to the 23" inch by 7 1/4" inch plywood piece by means of 3/8" inch machine bolts, standard washers, and lock washers. Please note, before the top is attached, the T-6061 aluminum right ascension axis shaft tube (1/4' inch wall thickness) must be inserted and mounted to the flange in conjunction with the 1/16" thick shims made from these galvanized plates. One hole is drilled through the flange and the shaft. The hole in the flange is then reamed to allow a 1/4x20 threaded machine bolt to pass through it. The slightly smaller hole in the shaft is then tapped for the 1/4x20 threaded machine bolt to screw into it. This will prevent the shaft from slipping up and down through the flange. Approximately 30 degrees from the first hole, another un-reamed hole will be drilled into the flange, but not through the shaft. It was tapped for another 1/4x20 threaded machine bolt, or hex-head lock screw so as to screw through the flange and push against the shaft to stabilize it.
